Are Humans creatures of habit? Everything we do on a daily basis has the potential to or will become a habit in our lives. A habit is a way of behaving or a tendency that someone has settled into, but it is also something we do unconsciously. Why unconsciously? Well, let’s say we drink coffee every morning, we usually wake up and without even thinking about it the coffee maker is on. If we want to change something we do unconsciously, we have to act consciously. We need to change from an unconscious state to a conscious one.
So, if something we do unconsciously is in essence something that we do automatically without thinking, it could also be said that it is something we are doing without awareness. In order to change from an unconscious state to a conscious one, we must be aware of ourselves and our actions. We must learn to act consciously, with awareness. In order to do this our life needs to be throbbing with intensity. But don’t perceive intensity as anger, to put it more simply, think about a light bulb. A light bulb burns brightly with intensity, it is not angry at anybody, it simply burns with as much intensity as it can. If it gets dusty or we put a thick blanket over it we wouldn’t be able to perceive it as much, we would be less aware of it. One thing we could do is to remove the blanket and clean it. Or we could increase the voltage.
How this relates to us is that we have allowed our physical body and our mind to act as the blanket. So we need to remove the blanket and/or increase the voltage. And how could we go about removing the light bulb or increasing the voltage? One thing we could do is Hatha Yoga, which will help us increase our intensity. Another thing would be meditation, which would allow us to clear our mind or clean the light bulb if you will. Without yoga or meditation it would be very difficult to become aware and change our habits. It would be very difficult to increase the voltage or clean the light bulb. This is just one of the multiple reasons to try yoga and meditation. It will help us break our habits, be more aware and act more consciously.
“Yoga is the science of activating your inner energies to such a vibrant and exuberant state that your body, mind and emotions function at their highest peaks” – Sadhguru
